TRANSform Me‘s Laverne Cox recently stopped by the VH1 Digital office for an extensive chat on her life, her show and, of course, transgenderism. In the clip above, Laverne talks about what it was like to be transgender as a child and the scorn she faced at school, as well as at home. Below, we talk about the progressive embrace of transgender identity that (in Laverne’s life, at least) runs parallel to the embrace of a traditionally feminine appearance, as well as the word “tranny” and whether it’s pejorative in Laverne’s opinion:
There’s lots more at the video page, including a discussion on why Laverne’s life experience gives her all the qualification that she needs to perform makeovers, and transgender women’s place in pop culture.
Watch the entire, extensive interview.

Today, an item appeared in Page Six claiming that “execs at VH1 are trying to reduce the role of Jessica Simpson‘s flamboyant hair dresser in The Price of Beauty,” and that Ken Paves was essentially a camera hog during the show’s shoot. We assure you that nothing could be further from the truth. Our press team has prepared a statement to counter the New York Post‘s piece:
We at VH1 are big fans of Ken Paves. His wealth of knowledge and expertise in the beauty field combined with his sense of fun and adventure have made him a huge asset both on-camera and behind-the-scenes in our upcoming series Jessica Simpson’s The Price Of Beauty. Viewers will see that he, along with Jessica and Jessica’s other best friend CaCee Cobb, are a tight-knit trio on the trip of a lifetime. Ken has also worked tirelessly around the country to help promote the series since production ended. We believe that we’ve just begun a wonderful, long-lasting relationship with Ken, and we look forward to exploring that even further.
You’ll get the chance to ask Ken about his involvement with the show when he, CaCee and the TRANSform Me girls join us for a live chat viewing party for the East and West Coast premieres of Jessica Simpson’s The Price of Beauty and TRANSform Me, starting at 10 PM ET on Monday, March 15.
